IKEA Learning Tower

: An IKEA hack for a DIY learning tower and alternatives
You’ve no doubt seen it plenty of times on Instagram and Pinterest. We’re talking about the DIY IKEA learning tower: a combination of the BEKVÄM step stool and the ODDVAR stool from the Swedish furniture retailer. With a bit of paint and decal, it looks lovely and is practical. However, opinions on the learning tower are divided. We’ll explain why and what possible alternatives are available to you.

What is a learning tower for children?

A learning tower for children is a type of highchair that allows your children to stand at the same height as the kitchen worktop so they can watch you and help out. The learning tower is secured on all four sides to prevent the little ones from falling out.

Study tower – yes or no?

Opinions are divided on this question. Many parents find the learning tower incredibly practical. Others, however, are rather sceptical about this homemade piece of furniture. On the one hand, the learning tower gives our little ones the chance to join in with the grown-ups in the bathroom and kitchen all by themselves. On the other hand, the question arises as to whether we should raise children to a height they can’t actually reach yet. What’s more, a learning tower is a piece of DIY furniture – so is it really stable enough not to tip over? The question of whether to use a learning tower therefore involves both pros and cons, as well as potential risks.

Anti-tip protection for the IKEA study tower

If you decide to build a learning tower using the IKEA BEKVÄM step stool and the IKEA ODDVAR stool*, you should be aware that your homemade learning tower can tip over easily. There are many online retailers offering a tip-over protection system designed for the DIY IKEA learning tower. This will help reduce the risk of it tipping over. Nevertheless, your child should never be left unsupervised whilst standing in the learning tower.

Conclusion on the DIY study tower

Before you build yourself a learning tower, you should be fully aware that a DIY learning tower like this is rather wobbly. Your child must therefore be supervised at all times. Do you have a rather restless child, or can you not guarantee 100% supervision? If so, you’d be better off looking for alternatives on the market or taking inspiration from our learning tower alternatives. Safety first!

The best alternatives to Lernturm

Lernturm Alternative

Chopping at child height

We’re absolutely thrilled with this IKEA hack! When her daughter outgrew her children’s kitchen, @lilien_zauber simply converted it into a worktop for little ones. To do this, she removed the sink and tap from the base unit. She then simply attached a sturdy wooden board from the DIY store to the ‘ play kitchen’ as a worktop. And that’s it – job done!

Play kitchen As an alternative to a learning tower

Little ones naturally want to get stuck in with the grown-ups – and they should! If you don’t want to convert your ‘ play kitchen’ into a worktop just yet, we’ve got another simple tip for you.
Simply place the play kitchen as close as possible to your kitchen so that the little ones feel they can join in and help out. Although the surface of the IKEA DUKTIG play kitchen isn’t all that big, it’s still big enough for budding chefs to carry out small tasks.

Brushing their own teeth: a guide for little ones

Combing hair, brushing teeth, washing hands – there’s no getting round it. These (often unloved) chores are best done at child height. Think of them as ‘learning stations’ for the bathroom. @fraeulein__schnickschnack has built a particularly lovely alternative for herself and her little ones. We’ve put together even more creative ideas for you here:

The IKEA TROFAST shelving unit, paired with the matching decal, lets our little ones play comfortably at eye level. At the same time, the lower section – within easy reach of the kids – can be used to store toys, dolls, building blocks, books and more. @sarahs_fashionseite shows you what your IKEA TROFAST could look like.

Picture books at child height

Little bookworms can choose their own picture books with this super-easy IKEA hack, just like @schwarzwaldtrulla. That’s because the spice rack keeps all the books at child height, so they’re always within easy reach for little bookworms.

A wardrobe for little ones

When it comes to clothes, too, many little ones want to be right at the forefront. That’s why it makes sense to organise the wardrobe at child height. That way, the little ones can learn to sort their socks all by themselves. And maybe even choose their Sunday best.
