Montessori: DIY clothes horse for children
Children love to imitate Mum and Dad in their everyday lives. That’s exactly why this DIY clothes horse for children is a brilliant project: it encourages independence, is great fun and invites children to get actively involved. In this simple, Montessori-inspired IKEA hack, we’ll show you step by step how to make a child-friendly clothes horse.
Here’s what you’ll need for the DIY children’s clothes horse

- an IKEA JÄLL laundry bag
- a pair of scissors
- a screwdriver
- string (we used plain packing tape)
- clothes pegs
How to build the Montessori clothes horse
Step 1: Take the IKEA laundry bag apart
First, cut the laundry bag out of the JÄLL. This can be done very quickly with a pair of scissors. The frame will later serve as the base for our mini clothes horse. Next, unscrew the screws holding the frame together and remove the connecting piece.
Step 2: Prepare the frame for the clothes horse
Now take the cord and attach an extension piece to the frame. You can base the length on your child’s height: for small children, the piece of cord will be longer and the height of the clothes horse will therefore be lower.
Step 3: Attaching the washing line
Now for the final step. Of course, the washing line is still missing. And that’s where the cord comes in again. Simply stretch five rows of cord across the frame of the drying rack and secure the lines with a knot.
Finally, it’s time to play with the children’s clothes horse
The DIY clothes horse is ready – and it’s time to start playing. Grab the pegs and hang the washing on the line!
