What is ‘kinetic sand’?

Magic sand, moon sand or kinetic sand, as it is also known, is a mouldable modelling compound made from flour and oil. The sand is light and airy, yet can be shaped wonderfully.

The biggest advantage of magic sand is that it doesn’t stick, making it the perfect way to play with sand indoors. It is therefore also suitable as a sensory play material for sensory tables or the ‘ mud kitchen’. It offers a great alternative to the sandpit, especially on rainy or cold winter days.

How to make magic sand

You can make magic sand yourself in a flash – almost as if by magic.

Mix the flour and oil in a ratio of 8:1. In our recipe, we used 8 cups of flour and 1 cup of oil. If you want to make more or less magic sand, just stick to the ratio and adjust the quantities accordingly. If you’d like to make even more magical sand in different colours, you can simply add a little food colouring to the magic sand.

As kinetic sand doesn’t stick, it doesn’t make as much of a mess as real sand. This makes magic sand perfect for use at home.

All you need now is a small indoor sandpit. You can easily build one using IKEA KNAGGLIG crates, IKEA TROFAST boxes and a piece of ‘ decal’ cut to size to fit on top. And it only takes 5 minutes!

Of course, the homemade ‘ mud kitchen’ can also be used outdoors on the balcony or in the garden – whether with magic sand or real sand. The choice is entirely yours!

FAQs about Magic Sand

From what age is magic sand suitable?

Homemade magic sand is generally suitable for children aged 2 and over. At this age, children discover the world mainly through their sense of touch, and magic sand encourages them to knead, squeeze and mould it.

Is magic sand toxic?

If you make magic sand yourself using our recipe, it contains no harmful ingredients. Our DIY recipe is based entirely on foodstuffs. This makes the sand ideal for young children, who often put things in their mouths as they explore.

How long does homemade magic sand last?

If stored correctly, DIY magic sand remains mouldable and ready to use for several weeks. It’s important to pack it in an airtight container – for example, in a box that seals well or a screw-top jar. This protects the sand from drying out and means you can use it again and again.

How can you make magic sand soft again?

If the magic sand becomes a bit crumbly or dry after a while, you can easily freshen it up. Simply add a few drops of cooking oil and knead the mixture thoroughly. The sand will soon be soft and pliable again, ready for new play ideas.
