IKEA Hack: Multifunctional table

One play table, lots of possibilities! A multifunctional table for children is a brilliant idea. Not only does it encourage creative play, but it’s also a real space-saver: it offers storage space for all sorts of toys and other small items. We’ve put together the best ideas for a DIY multifunctional table using IKEA furniture in the children’s room.

Build your own 3-in-1 IKEA play table

The

IKEA FLISAT children’s table is a real all-rounder. That’s because this little table, made from beech, features cut-outs for the IKEA TROFAST boxes. This creates storage space under the removable tabletop for pens, building blocks and the like. The two-part tabletop simply sits on top of the boxes, and the mess disappears.

If you also stick different ‘ design decal’ stickers onto the reversible table tops and the recessed boxes, you’ll end up with a creative 3-in-1 ‘ play table’.

Step-by-step guide to making a multifunctional table

Now stick one of your play sheets for the IKEA FLISAT table onto one side of the two-part table top. Turn it over and stick the second design onto the other side. Finally, stick the ‘ decal’ onto the lids of the boxes. Your multifunctional table is now complete.

IKEA FLISAT as a sensory table

Another brilliant idea for the FLISAT model is the sensory table. A sensory table is a real playground wonder in miniature! You can fill the recessed boxes with all sorts of different materials – from play dough to crackling natural materials. This encourages your child to explore using all their senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell – and, of course, wonder!

The IKEA shelf from the TROFAST children’s range combines two functions in a single piece of furniture. These handy little shelves provide the perfect surface for creative play mats. If you put two of the shelves together, several children can even play to their hearts’ content from both sides. Underneath the ‘ playing surface’ are small and large ‘ drawer’, depending on your needs, for storing toy cars, building blocks and much more.
