Alternatives to changing tables – other options for the nappy-changing area
As well as traditional changing tables, there are various ways in which you can set up a nappy-changing area. Space-saving alternatives are often needed, particularly in smaller flats. A cot with a removable changing table topper, a changing mat on the bath, or even using the washing machine as a multifunctional solution are all possible alternatives. Each option has its own pros and cons, which we will now look at in more detail.
1. Cot with removable changing table topper
A cot with an integrated changing table topper is a smart solution, particularly in small flats, for combining two pieces of furniture in one.
Advantages of the changing unit on the cot :
- Space-saving: A cot with a removable changing table topper combines two functions in one piece of furniture, thereby saving space in the nursery. If space is a key consideration in your home, you can benefit from this multifunctional design.
- Flexibility: Once the nappy-changing stage is over, you can remove the changing table topper and use the cot as normal. Note, however, that by the time the nappy-changing stage ends, the cot will likely be too small.
- Stability: Cots are very stable, ensuring your baby’s safety during nappy changes.
Disadvantages of a :
- Limited storage space: Compared to a changing table, cot beds offer less storage space for nappy-changing essentials. You can create additional storage space with a professionally fitted wall shelf.
- Height of the changing unit: With a cot bed, the height might be a little too low, potentially forcing you into a crouched position.
2. nappy changing in the bathtub
The bathtub also offers the option of setting up a nappy changing area here. Special attachments increase the work surface and can be a real space saver in small living spaces.
Advantages of changing nappies in the bathtub:
- Saving space: If space is limited in your home, using the bathtub as a nappy-changing area can be a practical solution.
- Water access: You have direct access to the tap when changing nappies.
- Easy to clean: A wipeable mat on the bathtub makes it easy to clean after changing.
Disadvantages:
- Limited storage space: As with a cot, the bathtub may not offer enough space for extensive nappy changing accessories. Tip: The RASKOG trolley from IKEA can provide additional space for changing utensils.
- Limited use: With an attachment, the bathtub can no longer be used as easily. So if you also use the bathtub daily for showering, the changing table topper on the bathtub is not recommended.
- Ergonomics: The height of the bathtub can be uncomfortable for changing nappies and cause back pain. The bath attachment should therefore provide sufficient elevation
- Need for adjustment: You must ensure that the attachment is stable and secure on the bath to protect your baby during nappy changing
3. Changing nappies on the washing machine: a multifunctional solution
There are even special changing mats designed for washing machines, which make the best use of space in small flats. Provided you don’t have a top-loading machine.
Advantages of changing nappies on the washing machine:
- Space utilisation: In small flats, using the washing machine as a changing area can be a practical and space-saving option.
- Ergonomic changing surface: The ‘ changing table topper’ on top of the washing machine usually offers a comfortable and ergonomic height for changing nappies.
- Multifunctionality: You can continue to use the washing machine as a regular washing machine whilst it also serves as a changing area.
- Access to water: The washing machine is usually located in the bathroom or kitchen, where a tap is close by. Water is best for cleaning delicate baby skin.
Disadvantages:
- Limited flexibility: If you use the washing machine as a changing area, you may need to clear the changing space when you want to use the machine. Conversely, you probably can’t change your baby on the washing machine whilst it’s running. So, constant rearranging is required.
- Limited storage space: Compared to a changing table, the washing machine may not offer enough storage space for nappy-changing supplies. A securely fixed wall shelf can help here and create space for nappy-changing supplies.
- Safety: Make sure the washing machine is stable whilst you’re changing nappies and doesn’t pose a danger to the baby.
