IKEA hacks for book storage in the children’s bedroom

Whether it’s picture books or their first proper stories – little ones’ books need to be stored somewhere. Often, there’s a lack of storage solutions that are both practical and child-friendly, so that the kids can easily reach the books themselves. What’s more, children’s books usually don’t fit on standard shelves due to their oversized formats. We’ve put together a few clever ideas for storing children’s books storage that are not only practical and space-saving, but also encourage children to use their books independently and tidy them away themselves. As an added bonus, they also brighten up the children’s room!

DIY hack: a book box made from the EKET shelving unit by IKEA

For all DIY fans, we have a brilliant idea that we spotted at @teresacasamonti: with the EKET shelf and a bit of creativity, you can conjure up a practical book box in no time at all! It’s a flexible and child-friendly solution for book storage. The great thing about this box is that it’s mobile! You and the kids can simply move it back and forth, depending on where you need it at the moment. Thanks to its low height, even the littlest ones can reach for their books independently, just like in the Montessori method, and put them away again after reading. This makes tidying up a breeze. The shelf is also available in many different colours – there’s something to suit every interior. We’ll show you step by step how to turn a simple shelf into a mobile and space-saving storage solution.

For the EKET hack, you’ll need:

  • An IKEA EKET shelf. It comes in many different colours – so you can match it perfectly to your interior!
  • Four castors. We picked up the RILL castors straight from IKEA, but you can also find suitable ones at your local DIY store.
  • A screwdriver. It’s even easier, of course, with a cordless screwdriver.
  • Suitable screws for the castors.

Here’s how to do it :

Step 1 – Assembling the EKET shelf

First, simply assemble the shelf following the IKEA instructions. It can be easily slotted together without screws.

Step 2 – Fitting the castors

Now screw the castors onto all four corners. Choose screws that fit the holes in the castors you have selected. This is quickest to do with a cordless screwdriver.

Step 3 – Filling the box

Your handy rolling shelf is now ready! You can simply fill it with books, or use it as a ‘ storage’ for toys or similar items. Just roll it over to wherever it’s needed!

DIY hack: Turn the IKEA MOPPE into a colourful book box

With this simple IKEA hack, the IKEA MOPPE becomes a practical book box for young readers. Best of all: you don’t have to go to the trouble of painting the shelf. With our self-adhesive ‘ yard goods’, the MOPPE gets a fresh new look in no time at all – clean, quick and tidy. With the book box, you’ll also have all your books in view straight away, without having to search for ages. Ideal for the nursery, reading corner or play area. We’ll show you how it’s done!

What you’ll need :

Step 2 - Sides laminate

Cover the outer sides of the MOPPE with the cut-to-size film. Thanks to the self-adhesive surface, this can be done quickly, neatly and without any preparatory work such as sanding or painting.

Step 3 – Fitting the legs or castors

Attach the furniture feet using glue or screws. We carefully drilled holes in the base and screwed the feet on. Please note: The base of the MOPPE is very thin – so take care when drilling

Everything in view: picture ledge as a bookshelf

This hack is for anyone who loves their books as if they were little works of art. Simply store the books on picture rails on the wall! The narrow rails are a flexible option – even for smaller rooms. They can be mounted at any height so that the kids can reach the books themselves. The big advantage: the books are neatly displayed in a row rather than hidden away behind one another. This means the little ones can spot their favourite books straight away and choose them more easily. At the same time, the picture ledge blends perfectly into the room’s décor and presents the books like little works of art on the wall.

The BECKVÄM spice rack made of aspen wood is particularly well-suited here. It’s especially popular in children’s bedrooms because it’s so compact and affordable. The shelf is quite deep and keeps the books safely behind the front slats. But the shelf is also very versatile in other ways: as well as serving as a bookshelf, we’ve put together a few other BEKVÄM hacks for you.

For those who need a bit more space, the FLISAT picture ledge is ideal. It’s very similar to the BEKVÄM, but is longer. However, you can do much more with the FLISAT wall storage than just use it as a bookcase. We’ll show you a hack for turning the shelf into a clever paper storage solution and a painting station. You can also decorate the picture ledge with our adhesive films however you like. This transforms the simple shelves into a practical, child-friendly and stylish solution for book storage.

DIY Hack: Book shelves on the IKEA TROFAST

With this simple IKEA hack, you can turn unused space on your TROFAST shelf into practical book storage for the nursery in no time at all. Simply turn the shelf upside down – the raised edge creates a secure surface where books can’t slide off.

Then stick several narrow wooden slats onto the surface at regular intervals. Children’s books can be neatly arranged between the slats. This way, your little ones’ favourite books are easily accessible, neatly stored and lovingly displayed at the same time.
