What is Magic Snow?

Magic Snow is our winter version of Magic Sand. Magic Sand is a kind of kinetic sand made from flour and oil, which, just like real sand, can be moulded into shapes. But it doesn’t leave any mess behind. And best of all: the sand can be made beautifully colourful with a bit of paint. This makes it much more interesting in the  mud kitchen.
Magic snow is made from cornflour and oil. That’s because cornflour crunches really nicely – just like real snow! Unfortunately, though, real snow doesn’t make an appearance very often in most parts of Germany. And besides, it melts so quickly. Our magic snow, on the other hand, lasts much longer for our little darlings, and the snow fun can even take place indoors.

How to make your own magic snow – here’s how

Almost as if by magic, this artificial snow is mixed together using just 3 ingredients. Mix the cornflour and oil in a ratio of 8:1. So we mixed 8 cups of cornflour with 1 cup of oil.
You can also replace the cornflour with plain flour. However, your ‘magic sand’ won’t crunch as nicely as real snow.

The ingredients for ‘magic snow’

  • 8 cups of cornflour
  • 1 cup baby oil or vegetable oil
  • Glitter
You’ll also need a large bowl to mix the ingredients in and, if necessary, a whisk or similar utensil.

Step 1 – Make ‘magic snow’ with just 3 ingredients

First, measure out 8 cups of cornflour and 1 cup of oil of your choice, and add both ingredients to a large bowl.
If you want to make more or less ‘magic snow’, simply keep the ratio in mind and adjust the quantities accordingly.

Step 2 – Now it’s time to mix

In the second step, mix the cornflour and the oil together. We first mixed the two ingredients together roughly with a whisk and then kneaded them with our hands.

Step 3 – Glitter, glitter!

It’s in Step 3 that the white mixture really turns into magic snow. That’s because now you add the glitter, so that the magic snow sparkles like morning dew and makes playing even more fun for the little ones.
And there you have it – magical snow! Even if we don’t have a white Christmas this year, nothing stands in the way of making snow angels and snowmen. This time they’re in miniature form, but they can be as tall as the little ones want them to be.
