What is "kinetic sand"?

Magic sand, moon sand or kinetic sand is a mouldable modelling clay made from flour and oil. The sand is light and airy, yet can be moulded wonderfully.

The biggest advantage of magic sand is that it doesn't stick, making it the perfect way to play with sand indoors. It is therefore also suitable as a sensory play material for sensory tables or the mud kitchen. This makes it a great alternative to the sandpit, especially on rainy or cold winter days.

Making magic sand

You can make your own magic sand in a flash - almost as if by magic.

The flour and oil are mixed in a ratio of 8:1. In our recipe, we have used 8 cups of flour and 1 cup of oil. If you want to make more or less magic sand, simply note the ratio and adjust the amount accordingly. If you want to make even more magical sand in different colours, you can simply add a little food colouring to the magic sand.

As the kinetic sand is non-sticky, it doesn't make as much of a mess as real sand. This makes the magic sand perfect for the home.

All that's missing is a small sandpit for indoors. You can easily build one from the IKEA KNAGGLIG* boxes, IKEA TROFAST* boxes and customised decal to fit it. And it only takes 5 minutes!

Of course, the homemade mud kitchen can also be used outside on the balcony or in the garden - whether with the magic sand or with real sand. The decision is entirely up to you!

FAQs about magic sand

From what age is magic sand suitable?

Homemade magic sand is generally suitable for children from around 2 years of age. At this age, children discover their world primarily through their sense of touch, and magic sand invites them to knead, press and mould.

Is magic sand toxic?

If you make your own magic sand using our recipe, there are no harmful ingredients in it. Our DIY recipe is based purely on food. This makes the sand ideal for small children, who like to put lots of things in their mouths when exploring.

How long does homemade magic sand last?

If stored correctly, DIY magic sand remains mouldable and ready for use for several weeks. It is important that you pack it in an airtight container - for example, in a tightly sealed box or screw-top jar. This will protect the sand from drying out and you can use it again and again.

How can you make magic sand soft again?

If the magic sand becomes a little crumbly or dry after a while, you can easily freshen it up. Simply add a few drops of cooking oil and knead the mixture thoroughly. The sand will become smooth again and ready for new play ideas.
