TROFAST Makeover: DIY Kids’ Corner Desk from IKEA Storage

TROFAST Makeover: Children's corner table from the TROFAST system

We wanted to create a space-saving and cosy corner for the children's room - with storage space, a small work surface for painting or crafting and enough room for creative ideas. To do this, we turned a simple IKEA TROFAST shelf into a corner table. We'll show you how to build a really nice, individual space for your kids with paint, wooden boards and a bit of craftsmanship.

Materials

  • 1x IKEA TROFAST shelf with boxes
  • Limmaland TROFAST foil
  • Furniture lacquer
  • as required: primer for furniture
  • Sandpaper (fine grit, e.g. 180)
  • 2x MDF wood panels - 15-20mm thick: 44cm x 120cm (floating table top) and 44cm x 99cm (top on the TROFAST)
  • 1x wooden slat approx. 30cm long
  • 1x angle bracket (wood or metal)
  • 1x flat metal plate (to connect the two wooden boards, approx. 15-20cm long)
  • Screws, dowels, washers (suitable for the wall and material - it is best to seek advice from a DIY store)

💡 DIY hack: use the colour mixing service

Do you have a favourite colour in mind that matches your furniture perfectly? Or would you like to match the colour of the corner table to the foils of the TROFAST boxes? Many DIY stores now offer a practical colour mixing service: Simply bring along your Limmaland foil, a colour card or a favourite piece - the machine will scan the colour and create the right shade for you. Many suppliers also allow you to select and combine your desired colours online so that you get the exact colour for your project.

Tools

  • Cordless screwdriver or drill
  • Paintbrush and paint roller
  • Duster or damp cloth
  • Folding rule, pencil, sharpie, spirit level
  • Sanding block or sanding machine

1. Preparing TROFAST and panels

Unscrew the mouldings for the boxes. Sand the entire TROFAST shelf thoroughly and then remove the dust. Apply a coat of primer to the TROFAST shelf and the two MDF boards as required and allow everything to dry according to the instructions. Depending on the previous colour of your furniture and what you want to paint over it, you can also omit the primer

2. Painting - how to make it really beautiful

Now comes the coloured varnish. Apply 2-3 thin coats rather than one thick coat to avoid creating noses. Use a paint roller for large areas and a brush for edges and corners. Allow to dry well between coats (according to the paint instructions). As soon as everything is dry, screw the mouldings for the boxes back in.

3. Fasten securely: Attaching the wall bracket

Place the smaller wooden panel on the TROFAST shelf. Screw the screws into the wooden strip so that they protrude slightly at the back Position the wooden strip on the wall so that it supports the larger panel (the "floating" tabletop) flush.
Tip: Mark the screw position with a sharpie, press it lightly against the wall and then drill at the markings. Then insert dowels and screw the skirting board in place.

4. Connect everything: Cleverly joining the boards together

Place the large panel on the wooden strip and align it straight. Now attach the bracket at the other end of the panel between the wall and the panel to make the construction stable.

Move the TROFAST shelf a little so that you can see the joint between the two boards from below Place the flat metal plate at the joint between the two MDF boards and screw it in place - this will ensure that the boards are firmly joined together.
