Midwife Meike’s Tips for Your Changing Area
Clever nappy changing: Tips from midwife Meike
In the first few months, the nappy-changing area is a central place in everyday family life. It's not just where nappies are changed, but also where laughter and closeness are created. And because this place plays such an important role, it should be one thing above all: practical, safe and cosy - for parents and baby.

We spoke to midwife Meike from Berlin, who has not only been supporting families for many years, but is also a co-founder and product developer at My Ephelia. Meike knows exactly what is important when it comes to nappy changing and designing a good nappy changing station - and gave us her best tips.
1. The ideal preparation
Before the actual nappy-changing begins, good preparation is half the battle. According to Meike, the changing unit should be stable and offer enough space for your baby and all changing utensils. With our changing table topperfor the HEMNES chest of drawers from IKEA and the accompanying storage shelf, you can transform the chest of drawers into a real storage space miracle for changing utensils and baby clothes.
Another point that many parents underestimate: the correct height of the chest of drawers. Meike recommends a position that is easy on the back so that daily nappy changing doesn't become a strain on your body. This point is particularly important in the first few months when countless nappies need to be changed. We'll show you how to find the right height and location for your changing unit.
💡 Meike's tip
Changing utensils should always be on the side that you can intuitively reach. For right-handers, this is usually the right side, for left-handers the left side - this way you avoid having to bend or twist over your child.

2. You really need these changing utensils
Parents often tend to overload the nappy-changing area - but less is more, says Meike. The basic equipment should be clear and easy to clean. This is what you really need, according to the midwife:
- Nappies - whether cloth nappies or disposable products
- Wet wipes, pure water or oil for cleaning
- A cream or oil for care - please without fragrances and alcohols
- Soft gauze cloths or disposable cloths as a base
💡 Meike's advice
Make sure that care products are as natural as possible. Your little one's skin is delicate and doesn't need any irritants.

3. Hygiene and organisation at the nappy-changing station
A clean nappy-changing area is not only hygienic, but also a sign of loving care. Make sure that used nappies are not stored at baby's head height, but disposed of directly in the nappy bin. The Changing mat or covers should be cleaned or changed regularly. And very important: wash your hands after every nappy change or alternatively provide a disinfectant. This way, the nappy-changing area remains a place to feel good.
4. Nappy changing with feeling: how to do it right
Changing nappies shouldn't be a quick action, but a mindful moment of attention. Take your time, be calm and talk to your baby - this provides security and strengthens the bond. Instead of lifting your child completely every time you change their nappy, it is gentler to turn them sideways. Important: Never pull up by the feet! This puts strain on sensitive joints. Instead, lift your baby gently by the hip joint.
💡 Tip from everyday life as a midwife
Lay the fresh nappy next to you, already unfolded and ready to hand - this makes nappy changing as easy and clean as possible.

5. Why midwife Meike loves the Limmaland nappy-changing solution
As a midwife, Meike knows countless nappy-changing stations. She told us what she likes so much about changing table topper from Limmaland:
The changing units from Limmaland fit perfectly on IKEA chests of drawers such as HEMNES. In just a few simple steps, they become a functional and safe nappy-changing station. Particularly practical: you can mount the side shelf either on the left or right - depending on which hand you use. This means you don't have to constantly reach over your baby.
Meike is also impressed with Limmaland when it comes to materials: the covers of the changing mats and snakes are made from certified Oeko-Tex fabrics and can be easily cleaned in the washing machine. And for those who want to make the most of their space, there's a matching shelf that closes the gap between the wall and chest of drawers - for extra storage space without losing any room.
We'll tell you how to design the perfect changing unit for your needs.
