50 years IKEA Germany

Happy Birthday: 50 years of IKEA Germany

Congratulations! IKEA is celebrating its fiftieth birthday and we are ready to celebrate in style! Since the first IKEA store opened in Germany in April 1974, IKEA has developed into one of the most popular furniture suppliers and can now be found in many of our living rooms. We reveal what IKEA is planning for its anniversary and how IKEA has managed to enchant us over the last 50 years.

đź’ˇDid you know? Where the name IKEA comes from

The name IKEA is made up of the initials of the founder Ingvar Kampgrad (IK) and the places of his childhood: "E" stands for Elmtaryd, the farm where he grew up, and "A" for Agunnaryd, the nearby village. So there is a little piece of Swedish home in IKEA! Incidentally, the province in southern Sweden where the village is located is called SmĂĄland! Does that sound familiar?

đź’ˇDid you know? High prices for vintage classics

In addition to the timeless classics that IKEA still offers today, there are vintage pieces that are highly priced in collectors' circles. Pieces from old designer collaborations in particular are often real treasures. Perhaps you still have a special treasure in your cellar or attic?

6 hacks for your next IKEA visit

  1. Even if we adults could happily stroll through the showrooms forever, it's often a different story for the little ones. While you take a leisurely stroll through the furniture worlds, the kids are in good hands in SmĂĄland. Here they can run around and play - without getting bored!
  2. For IKEA Family members, there are often great offers on furnishings or in the Swedish restaurant. It's worth taking a quick look at the website* before your visit to make sure you don't miss out on any bargains.
  3. If you'd rather spend your time with your loved ones than queuing to return a product, you can simply register an express return* online beforehand. No more queuing forever!
  4. At the Zweite-Chance store in the furniture store, you will find a selection of used furniture from the buy-back service*, many of which have long since been removed from the range. And the best thing is that you can easily sell your own dusty IKEA furniture via the buy-back function and make room for new items.
  5. If you can't fit everything in your car after a successful visit, you can hire a van from IKEA - simply register online and make a reservation*!
  6. Speaking of sustainability: if a piece of furniture breaks, you don't have to throw it away. Whether screws, hinges or knobs - you can easily reorder small spare parts from the spare parts service *.

From 14 to 19 October, IKEA invites you to a great birthday week* with exciting promotions!
