IKEA hacks for book storage in the children's room

Whether picture books or the first real stories - the little ones' books have to be stored somewhere. There is often a lack of a storage solution that is practical but also child-friendly so that the kids can easily access the books themselves. In addition, children's books usually don't fit on the usual shelves due to their oversized formats. We have a few clever ideas for storage children's books that are not only practical and space-saving, but also invite children to use and tidy up their books themselves. They also make the children's room more attractive!

DIY hack: book box made from the EKET shelf from IKEA

For all DIY fans, we have an ingenious idea that we saw at @teresacasamonti: With the EKET shelf and a little creativity, you can conjure up a practical book box in no time at all! It's a flexible and child-friendly solution for book storage. The great thing about this box is that it is mobile! You and the kids can simply move it back and forth depending on where you need it. Thanks to the low height, even the youngest children can reach for their books independently, just like Montessori, and put them away again after reading. This makes tidying up a minor matter. The shelf is also available in many different colours - there is something for every interior. We'll show you step by step how to turn a simple shelf into a mobile and space-saving storage solution.

For the EKET hack you need:

  1. OneEKET shelf*. This is available in many different colours - so you can match it perfectly to your interior!
  2. Four castors. We bought the RILL castors* directly from IKEA, but you can also find matching castors in DIY stores.
  3. A screwdriver. Of course, it's even easier with a cordless screwdriver.
  4. Suitable screws for the castors.

This is how it works:

Step 1 - Assembling the EKET shelf

Firstly, simply assemble the shelf according to the IKEA instructions. It is very easy to put together without screws.

Step 2 - Attach the castors

Now screw the castors to all four corners. To do this, choose screws that match the holes in the castors that you have chosen. The quickest way to do this is with a cordless screwdriver.

Step 3 - Filling the box

Your practical mobile shelf is ready! You can now simply fill it with books or use it as a storage for toys or similar items. Simply roll it to where it's needed!

Books within easy reach by the KURA bed

The wooden slats are very easy to attach and make it child's play to store the books. In combination with curtains and stickers for the KURA bed, you can create the perfect reading corner for your bookworms and bookworms!

Everything in view: picture ledge as a bookshelf

This hack is for all those who love their books like little works of art. Simply store the books on picture rails on the wall! The narrow mouldings are a flexible option - even for smaller rooms. They can be mounted at any height so that the kids can reach the books themselves. The big advantage: the books are lined up in a visible row and not hidden behind each other. This means that the little ones can recognise their favourite books immediately and choose them more easily. At the same time, the picture ledge fits perfectly into the room design and presents the books like little works of art on the wall.

The BEKVÄM spice rack* made of aspen wood is particularly suitable here. It is particularly popular in children's rooms because it is so small and inexpensive. The shelf is quite deep and stores the books safely behind the mouldings at the front. But the shelf is also very flexible in other ways: in addition to its function as a bookshelf, we have summarised a few other BEKVÄM hacks for you.

The FLISAT picture ledge* is suitable for those who need a little more space. It is very similar to the BEKVÄM, but is longer. However, you can turn the FLISAT wall storage unit into much more than just a bookshelf. We'll show you a hack on how to use the shelf to create a clever paper storage and colouring station. You can also decorate the picture ledge with our adhesive foils to your heart's content. This turns the simple strips into a practical, child-friendly and stylish solution for book storage.
